Young people on a walk above Derwentwater near Castlerigg

What to bring.

Let's skip the obvious — clothes, deodorant and any medication go without saying. Here's what's worth knowing for a stay at Castlerigg.

Don't forget

The essentials.

A few things we don't provide — please make sure these make it into your bag.

Sleeping bag or duvet cover

The big one — please don't forget it. See the note below if anyone in your group can't bring one.

A towel

We don't provide towels, so bring your own for showers.

Toiletries

Toothbrush, soap, shampoo — the usual. These aren't supplied either.

A water bottle

Refillable and ready for walks and busy days on site.

A little money for the shop

Our tuck shop has snacks, drinks and bits of Castlerigg merch.

Bring if you can

Handy for the fells.

Great to have for our walks and the Lakeland weather — but don't worry at all if you haven't got them. We've got jackets and boots we can lend you.

Walking boots

Comfy and sturdy for the trails.

A waterproof jacket

This is the Lake District — a rain jacket rarely goes to waste.

A small backpack

Handy for carrying water and layers when we head out on a walk.

A note for trip organisers

On retreats we lead, full bedding is provided for accompanying group staff. Everyone else is given a sheet, a pillow and a pillowcase, and just needs to bring their own sleeping bag or duvet cover (we can provide a duvet if needed).

We can also provide up to five full bedding sets for young people who genuinely can't bring a sleeping bag or duvet cover. Any additional full sets are charged at £7.50 each, so do let us know your numbers in advance.
